Arab Revolt centennial celebrations conclude in Aqaba

AMMAN — Deputising for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff Lt. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat, Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army Inspector General Brig. Gen. Mahmoud Al Matar on Friday attended the ceremony to change and raise the Great Arab Revolt flag in Aqaba.

The ceremony marked the conclusion of the Great Arab Revolt’s centennial celebrations, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported, adding that it was held at the Great Arab Revolt Square, which has the second highest (127 metres) flagpole in the Kingdom.

The square also houses the home of Sharif Hussein Bin Ali and the Aqaba Castle. Senior officers and officials attended the ceremony. Sharif Hussein, the great-great-grandfather of His Majesty King Abdullah launched the Revolt in June 1916 against Ottoman rule.
