AMMAN — The Jordan Breast Cancer Programme on Monday launched its 10th Breast Cancer Awareness Competition, aimed at informing the public of the symptoms, risk factors and early detection methods of the disease through the publication of content across print and audiovisual media.
Sponsored for the seventh year by the Housing Bank, the competition will also serve as a platform to highlight the “continued” role of media in encouraging women to conduct early breast cancer screenings, according to organisers.
During the launching of the campaign, Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation Nisreen Qatamesh stressed the “important role undertaken by the media over the past 10 years, which has contributed to saving the lives of many Jordanian women”.
For his part, Housing Bank’s Communications Officer Maher Habboush noted that the bank’s support “comes as a way to highlight the importance of the competition and its impact on women across Jordan”, adding that “the Housing Bank is keen to contribute to philanthropic and humanitarian work with a lasting effect on the society”.
Director of the National Registry of Cancer at the Ministry of Health Omar Nimri noted that a total of 1,143 new cases of breast cancer were registered in Jordan in 2015, with eight of the cases being among men, according to the latest figures issued by the register.
The Jordanian figures on breast cancer appeared considerable when compared to the total number of newly registered cases of all types of cancer, which stood at 5,550 in 2015.
A total of 2,670 cases affected men, while 2,880 cancers were detected for women, according to Nimri.
The media competition, which will last for three months, will include print and audiovisual media, with categories Such as news stories, reports and columns for print and broadcast, programmes and documentaries through radio stations and television channels for audiovisual.
