Cabinet orders legal review of penalties for terrorism

AMMAN — The Cabinet on Sunday instructed Minister of State for Legal Affairs Bisher Khasawneh and Justice Minister Awad Mashagbeh to review the penal laws and their complementary legislation to ensure stiff penalties for terrorists and extremists, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported
The Council of Ministers also approved a memorandum of understanding between the Jordanian and Canadian governments, under which Canada will provide 19.6 million Canadian dollars within five years to support municipalities in Jordan.
Also on Sunday, the Cabinet endorsed an agreement with the European Commission to fund the Cross-Border Cooperation Mediterranean Programme 2014-2020 government, Petra reported.
Thirteen European and Mediterranean states, including Jordan, are in the programme.
The Cabinet also approved an agreement between Jordan and the US to provide agricultural products.
The products are a new 100,000 tonnes “exceptional wheat grant” for 2017, worth around JD18.7 million.
Also during Sunday’s session, the Council of Ministers appointed the former assistant to the Awqaf Ministry’s secretary general for financial and administrative affairs, Mahmoud Al Hadid, as the ministry’s secretary general.
Former acting director general of the Hajj and umra department, Majdi Btoush, was also confirmed as its new director general.
