AMMAN — The Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET), in a recent statement, commended His Majesty King Abdullah for emphasising the importance of combatting tobacco use, particularly among school students.

“We extend our unwavering support for His Majesty’s visionary leadership and steadfast dedication and commitment to the well-being of the Jordanian population and residents in the country,” the statement said.

His Majesty’s call for a comprehensive anti-smoking strategy, underscored by the protection of youth and strict enforcement of the Public Health Law, is a resounding testament to his commitment to the health and prosperity of Jordan, according to EMPHNET.

In line with this effort, EMPHNET has undertaken the development and implementation of context-specific, culturally attuned anti-tobacco media messages. Further, the United Against Tobacco Campaign is a multifaceted endeavour aimed at heightening awareness about the dangers of tobacco, promoting smoking cessation and advocating for the enforcement of the Public Health Law, which explicitly prohibits smoking in public places. The campaign website provides details of the initiative, with materials available in English and in Arabic.

The statement also pointed out Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh’s commitment to intensify inspections within public institutions, also acknowledging Health Minister Feras Hawari’s insights into the detrimental impact of smoking on youth and children.

EMPHNET also pointed out the emergence of new tobacco products, which underscore the need for vigilant regulation, stating that the network “wholeheartedly supports” enhanced regulations to prevent the spread of such products, ensuring the well-being of all age groups.

“We are thrilled to endorse the initiatives put forth by Education and Higher Education Minister Azmi Mahafzah, particularly the assignment of law enforcement officers to educational premises. By fostering awareness and knowledge, we are nurturing a generation empowered to make health-conscious decisions,” the statement added.

Concluding, the network noted its resolute commitment to stopping tobacco use in the Kingdom and realising a healthier, tobacco-free future for all of Jordan’s citizens and residents.
