EU parliament delegation urges immediate ceasefire in Gaza, praises Jordan’s diplomatic efforts

AMMAN — Isabel Santos, head of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Mashreq Countries, on Thursday conveyed her deep concern about the war on Gaza.

During a press conference at the end of her visit to Jordan, Santos underlined the urgent need for an immediate end to the destructive war against Gaza and stressed the importance of ensuring humanitarian aid access for to the affected population, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

An overwhelming majority of EU Member States voted in favour of an immediate ceasefire at the recent United Nations General Assembly, she said, noting that the delegation reiterated its support for Jordan’s diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

Underlining the main objectives of the visit, she said that it included the convening of the 11th International Parliamentary Meeting with Jordanian counterparts, amidst the critical situation in the region due to the ongoing war in Gaza. 

The delegation and the Jordanian Parliament reaffirmed their strong partnership and expressed their political will to further strengthen their cooperation, she said.

She highlighted the EU’s commitment to regional peace and stressed that the two-state solution remains the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability. 

The European Parliament commended Jordan’s efforts in hosting and assisting Palestinian and Syrian refugees and pledged continued support for the Kingdom. 

The delegation presented the results of its meetings with Jordanian officials, civil society representatives and human rights think tanks over human rights, noting that Jordan is recognised as a key partner for the European Union in the region.

The importance of a ceasefire to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the besieged Gaza Strip was underlined, in line with the consensus reached by EU Member States at the recent United Nations General Assembly.
