AMMAN — Livestock farms impacted by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) are in-line to receive compensation in August, according to a stakeholder.

Speaking with The Jordan Times, the president of the Al Dhuleil Dairy Cattle Association, Ali Ghabayen, stated that “the compensation issue is currently being discussed at the Legislation and Opinion Bureau, and most probably the impacted farmers will be compensated this August”.

There are over 90 farms under the umbrella of the Al Dhuleil Dairy Cattle Association who are awaiting support. The compensation is vital to allow farms to continue operating, according to Ghabayen.

As part of the expected package, loans of JD20,000 would be granted from the Agricultural Loan Fund. Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture determined the losses of cattle farms to amount to over JD4.5 million.

During the most recent meeting of the Amman Chamber of Commerce, an agreement was reached to expedite the compensation process for affected farms. The meeting brought together Minister of Agriculture Khalid Hneifat, representatives of the Dairy Cattle Association and other stakeholders

“Farmers cannot afford any further delays; they have already had enough financial troubles and are in dire need of financial assistance,” Ghabayen said.
