AMMAN — Exports of fruit and vegetables increased by 21 per cent in August compared to the same month last year, Agriculture Minister Akef Zu’bi said on Tuesday.

The country exported 84,700 tonnes of fruit and vegetables last month, Zu’bi said in a statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times.

Last month’s exports amounted to JD45 million, the minister added, noting that the United Arab Emirates was the main destination, importing 23.7 per cent of the produce.

Saudi Arabia ranked second with 18.7 per cent, followed by Kuwait and Iraq, with 17.5 per cent and 11 per cent respectively, the statement said.

Tomatoes topped the Kingdom’s export list, followed by peaches and bell peppers.

Zu’bi said exports of fruit and vegetables during the first eight months of this year increased by 12.8 per cent, compared to the same period last year.
