AMMAN – The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) has closed down 101 shops and suspended 41 others since the beginning of Ramadan because they were unlicensed and for failing to meet health standards, GAM said in a statement issued Sunday.

Municipal teams also destroyed 63,348 litres of juice and 19 tonnes of foodstuff that was not fit for consumption, said the statement. Mervat Mheirat, the director of the GAM’s health supervision department, said it issued 961 tickets and 551 warnings during 3,227 field visits by GAM teams.
