AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday voiced his appreciation of the efforts exerted by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) in administrating the 18th Lower House elections.
He noted that the international community has testified to the integrity and transparency of the September 20 polls.
His Majesty, at a meeting with the IEC president and members at Al Husseiniya Palace, called for building on this success, so as to develop a model that can be implemented in future elections, whether at the municipal level or governorate councils, according to a Royal Court statement.
For his part, IEC President Khaled Kalaldeh presented a briefing on the mechanisms the commission applied during all stages of the parliamentary elections, until announcing the final results.
In this regard, Kalaldeh referred to the support offered by all relevant institutions to enable the IEC to execute its tasks as planned.
He also presented the highlights of the IEC’s plan to hold the municipal and governorate councils’ elections, the statement added.
In remarks to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Kalaldeh said the meeting covered the efforts exerted by the IEC and citizens to render the elections a success in the midst of a turbulent region, describing the success as a step forward towards further political reform.
He noted that the municipal and governorate council elections will be held after the Cabinet assigns a date to hold them.
Kalaldeh also told Petra that the IEC is compiling a report on the 18th Lower House elections and on a proposed plan to raise public awareness on the Decentralisation Law, in addition to acquainting people with measures to be followed when electing mayors and members of municipal councils.
