Investigation under way into Aqaba Port incident

AMMAN — Police on Monday said they were investigating an incident involving a 31-year-old man who reportedly drove his car into the sea in Aqaba a day earlier and died.

Civil Defence Department (CDD) and naval forces retrieved the body and the vehicle from the sea on Monday morning, Public Security Department Spokesperson Major Amer Sartawi said.

A second source said CDD rescue teams were alerted by the man’s parents who said that “their son and his Hyundai Accent vehicle are lying on the sea bed in Aqaba’s Port 7.”

“The victim left a letter for his family on Sunday night telling them that they would find his body and vehicle in Port 7 and asking for their forgiveness,” a senior official source told The Jordan Times.

The motives are still unclear for why the victim, an Aqaba resident, allegedly wrote the letter, the source added.

Sartawi told The Jordan Times that police have ruled out “homicide or accidental death and are leaning towards the theory that the man killed himself”.

“We are still investigating the incident and questioning his family and friends,” Sartawi said.
