Irbid-Zarqa white cabs, buses go on strike

AMMAN — Irbid-Zarqa white cab and bus owners on Thursday went on strike in objection to the Land Transport Regulatory Commission’s (LTRC) decision to relocate and separate their vehicles from medium-sized buses operating the same route, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Strikers demanded that buses of all sizes be allowed to work the same route in addition to a unified parking location for all buses and white cabs. The relocation of medium-sized buses costs bus owners a great deal when passengers refrain from travelling on buses, strikers said.

LTRC Director Rola Omari said the relocation decision was made with the aim of revitalising the Irbid-Zarqa route, adding that 50 buses were negatively affected by the increasing trend among citizens to choose faster transportation methods.

Omari added that the decision came in response to passengers’ demand for faster, more efficient public transport.
