Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes on Friday the provisional measures order issued by the International Court of Justice against Israel (JT file)

AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed on Friday the provisional measures order issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel.

In a statement following the ICJ's ruling on Friday, the ministry also commended South Africa for lodging the lawsuit against Israel at The Hague-based ICJ.  The lawsuit accuses Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, in violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Ministry's spokesperson Sufyan Qudah underscored the significance of the Court's provisional measures order, which "if implemented could effectively halt Israel's killing of the Palestinians".

In its ruling on Friday, the ICJ ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to halt with immediate effect all genocidal acts and protect the Palestinian people in Gaza. Israel was also ordered to report back to the Court within a month on its implementation of the provisional measures.

Qudah also stressed the urgency of implementing these measures and for immediate action to cease the killing of innocent people in Gaza and prevent the destruction of vital facilities crucial for their survival.

"This comes after over 26,000 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli aggression, which also forced two-thirds of the population to flee their homes and denied them access to basic services like food, water and medicine."

He also reiterated that the international community must act to halt Israel's aggression on Gaza, adding that such Israeli actions are considered “flagrant violations” of international law and international humanitarian law and all moral, legal and humanitarian principles.
