AMMAN — Jordan on Wednesday was reelected as UNESCO executive board member for 2021-2025, during the 41st General Conference in Paris.

Jordan’s Ambassador to France and the Kingdom's permanent delegate to UNESCO, Makram Queisi said that Jordan maintaining its membership reflects the great appreciation and respect that the Kingdom enjoys under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

He added that Jordan will continue to support UNESCO and its decisions aimed to preserve the heritage of the old city of Jerusalem and its Walls, in accordance with the mandate entrusted to it, based on the Old City’s inclusion on the World Heritage list in 1981, at the request of Jordan, and on the list of World Heritage in Danger in 1982.

Jordan's reelection will contribute to obtaining the necessary support from UNESCO and its member states to feature a number of Jordanian archaeological and heritage sites on the World Heritage list.

The reelection follows Jordan’s success in registering the historic city centre of Salt on the World Heritage list, thus becoming the sixth Jordanian site to be added to this list after featuring the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ in 2015.

The Kingdom’s membership also paves way to rally support for UNESCO programmes in Jordan, especially those related to education, literacy, teacher training, vocational education and scientific research, most notably the Synchrotron project, which was officially launched under a Royal patronage in partnership with UNESCO in 2017.
