Jordan sees US strike on Syria ‘necessary and appropriate’ after chemical attack

AMMAN — Jordan on Friday reiterated its condemnation and rejection of the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), following a chemical attack against civilians in Khan Sheikhun town in Syria’s Idlib Province on Tuesday, Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani said.

Momani called the attack “inhumane” and a “heinous act”, which triggered widespread international reactions, the last of which was Friday’s US missile strike against a Syrian military base thought to have been used to launch the chemical attack, a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Jordan, the minister said, considers the strike as a necessary and appropriate response to the non-stop targeting of innocent civilians with WMDs and the committing of crimes against humanity.

Momani, who is also the government’s spokesperson, renewed the Kingdom’s support to all international efforts to prevent future recurrences of the use of chemical weapons. The minister urged the international community to exert all efforts to stop violence against civilians and innocent people.

Momani said the recent developments once again underline the pressing need for the international community to stand united to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis and support efforts to ensure the success of the Geneva talks. Success on these issues would put an end to inhumane acts against the Syrian people, the minister noted.
