Man jailed for 5 years for robbery, attempted murder

AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a June 2016 Criminal Court ruling sentencing a man to five years in prison after convicting him of attempting to rob and murder a man in an Amman neighbourhood in October 2012.

The court declared the defendant guilty of robbing and attempting to kill the victim in Marka on October 21 and handed him a 10 year prison sentence.

The sentence was immediately reduced to half because the victim dropped charges against the defendant.

Court papers said that the defendant and another accomplice knew that the victim was in possession of JD20,000 and decided to rob him on October 21.

On the day of the incident, the court maintained, “the defendant pretended that he wanted to discuss a matter with the victim, and, when he made sure that he was in possession of the money, he shot him once in the neck and thought he died. He took the cash and JD350 that were in the victim’s pocket and left.”

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and survived the shooting,  telling investigators that the defendant robbed him and then attempted to kill him.

“The Criminal Court’s proceedings were accurate and correct and the defendant received the appropriate punishment,” the higher court ruled in early July.

The Cassation Court comprised judges Yassin Abdullat, Bassim Mubeidin, Mohammad Beirudi, Mohammad Ersheidati and Mohammad Tarawneh.
