AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a June Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to one year in prison after convicting him of crashing into a police car in Amman in December 2020.

The Criminal Court found the defendant guilty of the misdemeanour charge of resisting law enforcement officers in the Marj Hammam area on December 23, and handed him the maximum punishment.

The court also found the defendant guilty of several felony violations of traffic laws, including driving with an expired licence, driving with expired car insurance and driving without a licence plate.

Court papers said that the defendant had an old feud with another man who a police patrol arrested near the defendant’s house.

“The defendant jumped in his car and followed the police patrol,” the court documents said.

The defendant the crashed his vehicle into the police patrol car, causing minor injuries to four officers inside the vehicle, the court papers added.

The defendant cursed at the officers while being detained following the crash, the court added.

The defendant contested his ruling via his lawyer, who argued that there were “legal errors in the investigation procedures”.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate, and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Majid Azab, Hayel Amr, Fawzi Nahar and Ibrahim Abu Shamma.
