AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a March Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to one year in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man in Zarqa in June 2019.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant, a car spare part dealer, guilty of shooting a man in the neck on June 25 following “a heated argument”.

Court papers said the defendant engaged in an argument with another dealer over selling some spare parts over the phone.

On the day of the incident, the victim went to the defendant’s shop and they engaged in “a heated argument”, court papers said.

“The victim grabbed a brick and attempted to throw it on the defendant so the latter grabbed his gun and fired one bullet at him,” court papers said

The victim survived the assault after undergoing surgery to his neck at a nearby hospital, the court papers added.

However, attending physicians at the hospital determined that the injuries were life-threatening and he survived due to medical assistance.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Fawzi Nahar, Nayef Samarat, Yassin Abdullat and Mohammad Khashashneh.
