AMMAN — Social media users on Tuesday voiced their outrage over a video that circulated online showing a man reportedly waving a sword and striking a taxi driver with it in Zarqa Governorate.

Police said they are searching for the motorist who was seen clearly exiting his sliver Hyundai vehicle, opening its trunk and grabbing a sword shortly after his mirror touched the mirror of a passing taxi.

The man was seen in the video clip approaching the taxi, then waved the sword and struck the taxi driver’s arm with it before being pushed away by bystanders and a woman who was with him in the vehicle.

Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi told The Jordan Times that an all-points bulletin was issued on the suspect’s vehicle, adding that the man will be “eventually apprehended because his face, vehicle model and licence plate were clear in the video clip”.

The police official told The Jordan Times that the woman who appeared in the video attempting to stop him “was his mother” and that “she was arrested by police after claiming that she was attacked by the taxi driver”.

“The woman went to the police station to file a complaint against the taxi driver but instead was transferred to the Zarqa prosecutor on false and malicious charges and was ordered detained for one week pending further investigation,” Sartawi said.

Meanwhile, the taxi driver was treated for a deep cut wound and broken bones to his arm, the police official added.

Ibrahim Hweitat commented on the video on his Facebook page saying that “we do not live in a forest. What a shameful act by this man who was carrying a sword”.

Eman Adawi wrote on Facebook: “These people who do not have a brain to think of should be severely punished so that it would be a lesson for others”.

El Karam added on his Facebook page: “Police should investigate why this man is carrying a sword with him in the car.”
