As mercury rises, power demand touches 2,970 megawatts

AMMAN — The rise in temperatures has pushed up electricity peak load that is common during mid-July to mid-August, the National Electric Power Company said on Wednesday.

Peak power demand on Tuesday touched 2,970 megawatts while it revolved around the same figure on Wednesday, the power company said adding that the load is expected to hover around between 3,000 and 3,150 megawatts, this summer. It said the peak load in July last year stood at 3,000 megawatts.

Meanwhile, the heatwave that is affecting the country is expected to subside by Thursday, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in a statement.

According to the JMD, warm weather is forecast in hilly areas while it will be hot in other parts of the country with moderate to brisk norhtwesterly winds on Thursday.

On Friday, temperatures will witness a further drop reaching the annual average for this time of the year. Summer conditions will prevail across most parts of the Kingdom while the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba will remain hot.
