Ministers discuss decentralisation measures

AMMAN – Interior Minister Salameh Hammad on Tuesday chaired a meeting to discuss the executive framework of the Decentralisation Law, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

Hammad said the Decentralisation Law is one of the main reform pillars, contributing to developing services in the governorates and giving the public a greater role in decision making. 

The minister reviewed steps taken by the ministry since the law entered into force, such as identifying the logistic and technical needs required for its implementation, holding meetings with  donors, finding suitable land plots to build governorate councils and preparing by-laws and regulations related to the law.

The law entails holding elections for governorate councils, which will be tasked with overseeing development and service projects in the governorates. 

Governorate council elections are expected to take place next year.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury said his ministry will coordinate with the Interior Ministry to provide logistic and technical support for development units at the governorate and municipal levels.

ICT Minister Majd Shweikeh, Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs Musa Maaytah, Minister of Social Development Khawla Armouti, Minister of Municipal Affairs Walid Masri, and Finance Ministry Secretary General Ezzedin Kanakryeh also attended the meeting.
