AMMAN — The placement of electoral campaign posters on roads and near roundabouts is concerning some motorists, who say the promotional material blocks visibility.

In recent remarks to The Jordan Times, motorists criticised authorities for allowing candidates to overdo their campaigns.

“Posters are everywhere, but in certain areas like this I can see they are hazardous because I can’t see other cars coming from other directions,” said Ahmad Jarrar, who was near the Interior Ministry Circle in central Amman.

“Cars coming from the left side, which have the priority at the circle, cannot be seen properly,” he added.

Mohammad Daaseh, who was driving in the same area, agreed.

“This place is always congested and the posters are confusing drivers because they block visibility,” he added.

Authorities should have prohibited candidates from installing posters near roundabouts, said Reem Khasawneh.

But Basem Tarawneh, the deputy director for districts and environmental affairs at the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), said the municipality had not received any complaints about posters from Amman residents.

He said GAM can ask candidates to remove posters which cause any risk to motorists.

Since candidacy registration opened on August 16, the streets of Amman and other cities have been covered by promotional posters of candidates.

A total of 1,293 candidates are competing for the 130-seat Lower House on September 20.
