MPs launch enquiries into taxation, fuel-pricing policies, delayed gov’t projects

AMMAN — MPs raised a number of questions and enquiries to the government on Tuesday regarding recent and newly-enacted taxation, energy and fuel-pricing policies, among other issues.

During the Lower House oversight session, MP Mustafa Yaghi launched an enquiry into the legality of the fuel pricing mechanism and the taxes and fees incurred on oil derivatives and the electrical power bill.

Meanwhile, MP Ahmad Hmeisat questioned the government on the delay of the Kherbet Al Souq Tunnel construction project.

Many inquiries were raised by MPs Shoaib Shdeifat, Jawdat Darabseh and Dima Tahboub, on the expenses of the 2017 cultural capital project, university transportation and the JD26 million spent on e-government projects.

MP Kheir Abu Saalik called for further clarifications on the government’s shale-oil extraction plans.

MP Khalil Attieh asked for comprehensive clarification on the National Electric Power Company’s agreements with renewable energy companies.

While other MPs said they were satisfied with the answers provided by the government, Deputy Hoda Otoum pointed to a JD54 million waste in the Ministry of Education’s books tender, demanding an explanation.
