National Commission for Women reviews Jordan’s standing on Global Gender Gap Report

AMMAN — The Jordanian National Commission for Women on Thursday said that the Kingdom almost maintained its position on the recently published Global Gender Gap Report 2022 by the World Economic Forum.

The commission said that the report, annually issued by the forum for 16 years and included 146 countries this year, showed that the Kingdom maintained the same position as last year, scoring 0.639 and ranking 122nd, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The commission said that Jordan's scores in most indicators are similar to 2021, where at the regional level the Kingdom is among the first three countries on women’s participation and economic opportunities indicator.

The sub-indicator concerned with the women's participation in the labour markets puts the Kingdom in the penultimate rank at the global level at 145 with a score of 0.216.

Jordan’s score in women’s representation in public and political life dropped compared with 2021, according to the report. The current Cabinet includes only two female ministers and women constitute 12.4 per cent of the Lower House. Women’s representation in the Senate now constitutes 10.8 per cent, down from 15.4 per cent in 2020.

The commission noted that had Jordan maintained the political empowerment score as in 2020, which stood at 0.121, this year's indicator would have stood at 0.652, and Jordan would have been second at the Arab level after the UAE to rank 116th globally.
