NCHR to refer findings in case of citizen’s death in detention to prosecutor general

AMMAN — The National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) on Sunday said it will refer what it has of documents and findings related to the death of a citizen at a police station to the civil prosecutor general office.
Ibrahim Zahran died at the Shmeisani police station on Friday after his detention by Criminal Investigation Department personnel, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Zahran’s family members have claimed that Ibrahim’s death was a result of “severe torture” in custody.
The centre considered Public Security Department Director Maj. Gen. Fadel Hmoud’s decision to form an investigation committee as a good step, but described it as “not enough”, as the Constitution requires cases of torture to be handled by civil courts, regardless of measures taken by the Public Security Department against violators of the department’s laws.
