AMMAN — The Public Security Department (PSD) was ready on Sunday to deal with any incidents once the results of the General Secondary Certificate Examination’s (Tawjihi) summer session were announced, a PSD source said.

PSD Spokesperson Maj. Amer Sartawi said the department had a plan to regulate traffic flow on the streets to deal with violating drivers after the announcement of the results, adding that no major incidents were reported.

Students usually celebrate their success in car processions, driving around Amman’s streets and honking.

“A total of 180 traffic fines related to Tawjihi were issued until 2pm on Sunday,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times, adding that security procedures will continue until celebrations end.

“Traffic jams were mainly centred in the Dahiyat Al Rashid, Shmeisani and Abdoun neighbourhoods in Amman,” he added.

The majority of violations usually involve motorcades that hinder traffic flow, festive gunfire and the illegal use of fireworks.

Sartawi said that no injuries were reported in celebratory gunfire.

According to a PSD statement, traffic tickets are issued directly to violating motorists, but if the driver could not be stopped, he/she will be called later.

PSD, Central Traffic Department and Criminal Investigation Department personnel also participated in the campaign to detect and prevent any illegal practices that could endanger the safety of others.

Around 126,773 students sat for this year’s Tawjihi summer session.

Tawjihi is a make-or-break exam for high school students, as its results determine their future in higher education — at which university they are allowed to enrol and what major to study.

Last year, when the Tawjihi summer session results were announced, police issued 1,450 traffic tickets to motorists.
