Prince Mired, Senate committee talk rights of persons with disabilities

AMMAN — HH Prince Mired, president of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), on Monday met with the head and members of the Senate's citizens' freedoms and rights committee.

Talks during the meeting covered means to strengthen the rights of people with disabilities, notably the right to access services and programmes provided by state institutions, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The prince reviewed the Kingdom's achievements in supporting persons with disabilities, especially in the legislative field. The prince said that access to education is the major challenge facing people with disabilities, as only 2 per cent receive education. Prince Mired also noted that allocations for persons with disabilities education are still limited, calling to place inclusive education on the list of priorities. 

He also brought attention to the weak political participation of persons with disabilities, in addition to the challenges related to jobs, health services, and independent living, among others. The prince stressed the need for a comprehensive national plan that prioritises the rights of persons with disabilities.
