AMMAN — The King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Centre (KHCC) on Wednesday shared its accomplishments in support of cancer patients, notably expanding comprehensive care and scientific research.

HRH Princess Ghida Talal, chairperson of the KHCF and the KHCC, noted that the KHCF and KHCC’s efforts are dedicated to “changing the reality of cancer in the region, towards a cancer-free future”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

As part of expanding the comprehensive care programme, a new KHCC branch was established in Aqaba in 2021, a move meant to alleviate distance burdens for residents in the southern region.

The KHCC also began providing outpatient services in the Oncology Centre at Al Basheer Hospital after taking responsibility for supervision, management and full operation of the department, as per an agreement with the Ministry of Health.

In the area of scientific research, Her Majesty Queen Rania honoured nine recipients of the 2021 King Hussein Award for Cancer Research. The Award, aimed to support cancer research, witnessed the participation of 111 researchers from 15 Arab countries.

Princess Ghida said that the KHCC continues to provide services for 23,100 patients, in addition to receiving 5,580 new patients. The centre has also conducted 220 bone marrow transplants and 2021 saw Jordan’s first cryogenic kidney cancer freezing procedure, the princess added.

Expressing appreciation to donors' efforts, the princess said that the treatment costs of 712 underprivileged patients were covered through both the Goodwill and Zakat Funds in 2021.

The Jordan Breast Cancer Programme continued its efforts to raise awareness and encourage early detection, with 21,000 women who received mammograms in 2021. Additionally, 29,434 new subscribers joined KHCF’s Cancer Care Insurance (CCI) programme.

In 2011, a Royal Decree was issued appointing HRH Princess Ghida Talal as the chairperson of the KHCF and the KHCC.
