AMMAN — Police on Thursday were questioning a man who allegedly shot and killed his 26-year-old daughter earlier in the day in Salt, official sources and relatives said.

The suspect reportedly shot his daughter at 6am at his house then headed to the nearest police station and turned himself in, a senior judicial official source said.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Ishaq Abu Awad started questioning the suspect to learn more about the incident, the judicial source told The Jordan Times.

“We still do not have a motive, but are certain that we will get more details once the suspect and family members are questioned by Abu Awad,” the source added.

A close relative of the victim told The Jordan Times that “Salt residents and the suspect's relatives are shocked by this incident and puzzled because the motives are not clear”.

The victim, a university teacher, was also continuing her higher education and was in her last year to obtain a PhD, the relative said.

“We do not understand why this shooting incident took place, especially since this is a respectable family in the Salt community,” the relative added.

The judicial source said the victim received a single fatal bullet to the head.

Public Security Department Spokesperson Major Amer Sartawi was unavailable for comment all day Thursday.
