School hours for Ramadan amended after parents’ feedback

AMMAN — Education Minister Wajih Oweis on Monday decided to amend working hours for schools and educational directorates during the holy month of Ramadan, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The ministry said that the amendment comes as a response to feedback from parents about school hours during the fasting month, in light of the different timings for the start of work for public sector employees, and in application of what best serves public interest.

The working hours during Ramadan will be as follows:

Educational directorates’ working hours will start at 9am and end at 2pm.

School hours will be as follows:

For single-shift schools, working hours start at 9am, the ministry said, adding that the duration of each period will be 40 minutes.

In regard to breaks, recess will extend for 10 minutes, and the five-minute break between classes will be cancelled.

For the last two periods, the seventh period ends at 1:50pm, while the eighth period is cancelled. 

Working hours for two-shift schools will start at 9am for the morning shift and 12:30pm for the evening shift, the ministry stated, adding that the duration of each period will be 30 minutes.

Similarly, recess will extend for 10 minutes, and the five-minute break between classes will be cancelled.

The sixth period during morning shifts ends at 12:10pm, while the sixth period during evening shifts ends at 3:40pm.

Grades that have more than 30 classes per week will have physical education and art classes cancelled. 

As for the eighth period, it will also be cancelled.
