Slovenian president begins official visit to Jordan

AMMAN — Slovenian President Borut Pahor, who arrived in Amman on Friday, visited the Zaatari Refugee Camp on Saturday and had a first-hand look at the conditions facing Syrians, and the basic humanitarian and aid services Jordan offers them.

Pahor, who is scheduled to hold talks with His Majesty King Abdullah on bilateral ties and the latest regional and international developments during his several-day official visit, was briefed by the camp director, Col. Nawrez Hakouz, and representatives of international agencies on the conditions of the site.

The camp, 90km northeast of Amman, is home to some 80,000 refugees, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Slovenian president, who is also scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Hani Mulki and senior officials, checked on several facilities, including the Zaatari Camp Health Centre, which receives 500 to 600 patients daily and offers primary, psychological, and maternity and child healthcare.

Also on Saturday, Pahor and his accompanying delegation visited the ancient city of Petra, 235km south of Amman, and toured its historical sites and archaeological museums.

Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority Chief Commissioner Mohammad Nawafleh briefed Pahor, during his visit to the Petra Visitors’ Centre, on important contents of the new facility that highlights the city’s history as a capital of the Nabataean Civilisation.
