AMMAN — Police on Thursday said they had detained a man who allegedly stabbed and killed his father by mistake during a fight on Monday in Amman.
Police were notified that a man was stabbed and killed during a brawl in the Jabal Naser suburb on Monday night, and a man was arrested in connection with the stabbing, Public Security Department Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect was the son of the victim and that the suspect “stabbed his father who came to intervene in a fight between the suspect and another man”, Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
“It seems the father saw his son wielding the knife at the other man and decided to take the stab instead, but unfortunately it was fatal,” the police official said.
The man was referred to the Criminal Court prosecutor for further questioning and indictment, he added.
Head of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine Kais Koussous, who performed an autopsy on the victim, said the victim was stabbed in the thigh.
“The stab was fatal because it hit a major vein in the thigh and caused heavy bleeding, which was the cause of the victim’s death,” Koussous told The Jordan Times.
The forensic expert added: “It only takes five to seven minutes for an individual to die from such a stab wound to the thigh. It requires immediate medical intervention to try to save a life in this situation.”
