AMMAN — Moving away from the traditional fundraising techniques, the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF)  is organising “Steps for Life”, an initiative that gives citizens the opportunity to support the treatment of underprivileged patients at the King Hussein Cancer Centre’s (KHCC) by engaging in an entertaining and healthy  hiking experience.

“Steps for Life is a new and unique way to donate, as participants directly contribute to the treatment of a patient in need while also enjoying an exhilarating experience exploring new places, meeting new people and getting some exercise,” KHCF said in a statement sent to The Jordan Times, adding “it is a great way to help our patients while engaging our supporters who can ‘save a life with every step’.”

Organised for the third year in a row in collaboration with Mövenpick Group, TREKS and Jordan Travel Transport Company, the hikes have taken place in various locations across the Kingdom including Petra, Ajloun, Umm Qais and Wadi Al Hasa, among others.

“Through Steps for Life, individuals contribute with a participation fee, which is entirely forwarded towards the treatment of an underprivileged cancer patient at the centre,” Qatamish told The Jordan Times on Wednesday, citing the examples of one-year-old patient Ali helped through the 2017 hike or Ammar, 11, who needed support in his fight against a brain tumour this year.

Asked about the patients’ selection process, the director general noted: “KHCF works to rally support — locally, regionally and internationally — to achieve its life-saving mission through a wide variety of programmes and activities. With all these initiatives, we work to support all our patients and achieve our goal in ensuring that no patient in need is left untreated.”

“While each Steps for Life hike is being organised to help and support one specific patient, we are also always developing and implementing new campaigns and programmes to help us support more patients,” Qatamish pointed out, stressing that “new, fun and challenging initiatives” are constantly implemented to contribute to each patient's individual needs, whether financial, emotional or spiritual.

Since the beginning of 2018, four hikes have been organised with Steps for Life, with groups ranging between 30 and 60 participants, according to KHCF. “This is truly a unique opportunity to help KHCC and its patients in the fight against cancer by making a small donation as well as participating in an inspiring and exciting adventure in Jordan,” Qatamish stressed, adding that this also helps raise wider awareness among donors and supporters.

“For us, Steps for Life truly embodies the vision of KHCF, which is dedicated to saving lives with the highest standards of comprehensive cancer care and control as well as engaging society in the fight against cancer in Jordan, and the region," she concluded, voicing her pride to see "the community’s enthusiasm and support towards this growing initiative”.

People willing to register for the next hikes taking place on September 28, October and November can contact KHCF through 06 55 44 960 ext. 309/285;
