AMMAN — Friday marks the first day of summer, according to a Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) statement, which added that temperatures are forecast to be around their annual average this year.

The summer solstice will occur at 6:54pm on Friday, marking the longest day of the year with 14 hours and 14 minutes, JMD Director General Hussein Momani said. Average daily temperatures in Amman during the summer sit at around 32ºC with average nighttime temperatures of 18.5ºC.

Over the past 96 years, the capital witnessed 66 heatwaves, which happen when temperatures soar 5ºC above their annual average for more than three days, the JMD underscored.
