AMMAN – A masked man who tried to rob an accountant working at a government agency last month, turned out to be his colleague, police said Thursday.

The accountant was leaving the government department in the Tlaa Al Ali area to deposit revenues when he was attacked by two masked men who tried to steal the cash, according to a statement released by the Public Security Department (PSD) media office.

The accountant managed to foil the robbery attempt and the assailants fled the scene, the PSD statement said, adding that the incident took place on December 28, 2014.

Officers at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) identified the suspects and arrested one of them, who turned out to be a colleague of the accountant in the same government department, while police are still searching for the second suspect, the PSD statement added.

The arrested suspect confessed to being involved in the attempted robbery.

The PSD urged people to be cautious when carrying cash and to ensure they are escorted by others when depositing or withdrawing large amounts of money.

In the same statement, the PSD media office said CID officers arrested two men who were driving a stolen car that contained stolen items.

The two men have criminal records involving robbery.

Police contacted the owner of the car, who was unaware that his car had been stolen and thought it was still parked outside his house, the PSD said, adding that the vehicle was returned to its owner and the two suspects were referred to court.
