AMMAN — A joint force of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Northern Amman Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly killed his mother on Thursday in the capital’s Tareq area, the Public Security Department’s (PSD) media centre said on Friday.

Police on Thursday received a report that a man, who has a criminal record, killed his mother at her residence, according to a PSD statement.

Arriving at the scene, security personnel found that the victim, in her 50s, was attacked “heinously” with a “sharp tool”, and that the suspect could be her son who fled the place after reportedly committing the crime.

Local news websites reported that the suspect had decapitated the victim using a knife, but the PSD statement did not disclose further details on the nature of the crime.

Later, CID personnel and police patrols installed a security blockade and surveyed the area surrounding the crime scene in Tabarbour, in Tareq area,  to search for the suspect.

A security checkpoint suspected a person and arrested him, and further questioning revealed that he is the victim’s son. The statement said he had bloodstains on his clothes.

In his initial statement to the police, the suspect confessed to committing the crime, the PSD said, adding that further investigation is still under way.

Meanwhile, PSD Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi on Friday told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that the PSD is still looking for a person who first arrived at the crime scene before security personnel and took a photo of the victim and published it on social media outlets.
