AMMAN — The security agencies have arrested two persons who allegedly assaulted traffic policemen while on duty on Sunday, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Spokesman of the Public Security Department (PSD) Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said that a wedding motorcade passed in front of the traffic police closing the highway during the course of their official duty in one of the northern Amman areas on Sunday.

When the traffic police took plate numbers of the vehicles in the motorcade in preparation for the necessary action against them, a group of drivers from these vehicles went out of their cars, attacked and beat the policemen.

The spokesman stated that two of the people involved in the attack were arrested, adding that search is under way for others involved in the incident to bring them to justice.

Sartawi stressed that attacks on policemen while on duty "will not be tolerated", noting that "the stiffest penalties" will be issued against the attackers.

All legal procedures and the toughest administrative measures will be taken against the attackers, in addition to issuing clear instructions for an appropriate use of force when needed, which was granted in accordance with the legislation to enforce the law when anyone of the PSD officers is attacked, Sartawi explained.

He pointed out that the PSD continues to perform its duties and firmly enforces the law on everyone, while upholding and respecting the relationship between the PSD officers and the citizens, who are the pivot of the security process and the first partner of the PSD officers during the course of their official duty.
