Two dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in Zarqa

AMMAN — A man and his wife died on Saturday morning in Zarqa of carbon monoxide poisoning after inhaling gas from a heater they kept on during the night, the Civil Defence Department (CDD) said.

The 60-year-old man and his 50-year-old wife were taken to hospital, but they were pronounced dead on arrival, a source from the CDD media department told The Jordan Times over the phone on Saturday.

“We urge people not to leave their heaters on while sleeping. It is unfortunate to witness such incidents each winter,” the source noted.

Moreover, the department’s personnel evacuated 1,509 people stranded in the snow across Jordan.

“They were either motorists or pedestrians,” noted the source, adding that CDD staff transported 261 kidney dialysis patients to the hospitals and back to their homes and dealt with 176 deliveries, some of which were inside the ambulances.

Authorities were scheduled to issue instructions on Saturday using the sirens system to ban people from going out as of 6:30pm, the source said.

On Friday, a person died in Deir Alla and another was injured when a wall in their house collapsed.

The CDD said its personnel administered first aid to the injured and evacuated the body.

In two separate incidents on Friday, 11 were taken to hospital after suffering shortness of breath due to gas inhalation.

Also on Friday, Karak police rescued eight members of an Indonesian family who were trapped in their car due to the snow in the southern governorate, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
