AMMAN — A group of University of Jordan (UJ) students on Tuesday launched an initiative to collect donations to equip a treatment room for children diagnosed with cancer at the King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC).
The initiative is organised within a campaign titled “Feekum il Kheir” that began last Ramadan, its founder, Mutaz Sammour, told The Jordan Times.
“It was initiated by students and we managed to organise an iftar for more than 600 orphans in Ramadan,” Sammour added.
“We aim to help needy families and distribute schoolbags throughout the year.”
He said ??the new initiative emphasises the importance of having young people engaged with the world around them.
“As students, we aim to raise awareness of our classmates and their understanding of their community.”
Malak Arabiyat, a volunteer with the initiative, said students from different faculties “are collecting donations over the period of two days, hoping to build a fully equipped room for children battling cancer”.
“In the long run, Feekum il Kheir aims to collect about JD15,000 to build and equip more rooms for cancer patients,” Sammour said.
UJ Vice President Imad Salah commended the students’ initiative.
“It is very important to raise awareness about children dying of cancer daily in the Kingdom and the Arab world; we should help them fight this disease.”
Dean of Student Affairs Ahmad Abbadi noted that the initiative has received positive feedback and suggestions at UJ, and from society as a whole.
Abbadi commended the response of students and their willingness to help people in need.
“We have so much potential to create a better future for a better Jordan.”
