AMMAN — British Ambassador in Amman Bridget Brind and Canada’s Ambassador-designate to Jordan Tarik Ali Khan jointly led a Remembrance Day Service on Thursday.

Observed every year since 1919, Remembrance, or Armistice Day is marked on the anniversary of the end of World War I on November 11. The Armistice Day agreement took effect at eleven in the morning, at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.

Remembrance Sunday falls on the second Sunday of November, this year it will be observed on Sunday, November 13, 2022, according to a statement from the British Embassy.

The memorial service was hosted by Ambassador Brind at the British Residence and attended by staff from the British and Canadian embassies.

Representatives from 25 embassies and diplomatic missions in Jordan joined the service to commemorate British and Commonwealth armed forces personnel, as well as those who have been affected by conflicts and the victims of terror attacks.

The event was intended to serve as a reminder and reflection that nations who fought so bitterly against each other can come together to promote peace and stability.

This was also an opportunity to pay tribute to the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wreaths were laid by the British and Canadian ambassadors, Defence Staff officials and representatives from other embassies and Jordan Armed Forces.

As part of the memorial service there were readings of poetry and prayers said, with two minutes of silence observed.

On Sunday, November 13, the UK’s own National Service of Remembrance will be held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London, starting at 11am.
