World taekwondo bronze medal for Jordan’s Qattan

AMMAN — Jordan have secured a second medal at the 24th World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester, with Hamzeh Qattan winning bronze in the heavyweight division, according to the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service. 

The day after, Olympic champion Ahmed Abu Ghaush won silver, Qattan performed superbly well to take bronze in the +87kg class following three magnificent wins.

The experienced fighter launched his campaign with a 9-2 victory over Egypt’s Ayman Mohammed, before defeating Gabon’s Anthony Obame, 12-10, to reach the quarter final. Omar Al Yazidi, of France, was up next and he pulled off a stunning victory against the former World and Olympic medallist to reach the last four.

Despite another strong performance, Qattan came up short against Mexico’s Carlos Sansores of Mexico, settling for bronze and vital Olympic qualifying points. The two medals this weekend takes Jordan’s haul to six in the history of the championship. Next up for Jordan will be the fourth round of the Grand Prix on June 6 in Rome.
