By - Nov 07,2019 - Last updated at Nov 08,2019

AMMAN —The Swiss citizen who was injured in a knife attack in Jerash on Wednesday is recovering and will be able to return to Switzerland in the next few days, Swiss Ambassador to Jordan Lukas Gasser said on Thursday.

The Swiss foreign ministry followed up on the condition of the Swiss national, who received the necessary medical care, Gasser said, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The diplomat expressed his country’s condemnation of the attack and conveyed its wishes to the injured for a speedy recovery.

Also on Thursday, Mexican Ambassador to Jordan Roberto Rodriguez visited the injured, who include three Mexican nationals, at the King Hussein Medical Centre, and praised the level of medical care and service presented to them.

Rodriguez stressed that the incident would not negatively affect the “distinguished relations” between the two countries, adding that the condition of the three Mexicans is stable, according to Petra.

Eight people, including four tourists and four Jordanians, were injured on Wednesday after being stabbed by a man in Jerash.

Soon after the incident, the suspect was taken into police custody and was initially questioned to learn more about his motives for the attack.

Awqaf Ministry opens new technological channel for giving

By - Nov 07,2019 - Last updated at Nov 07,2019

AMMAN — The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs will launch its e-payment services for donation through “eFAWATEERcom” next week, offering a new platform for giving.

“This method enables the donor to have more trust, and further increases the credibility and effectiveness of charitable contributions,” spokesperson at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Hussam Hyari told The Jordan Times on Thursday.

The ministry’s digital transformation plan started in the Hajj season of this year through the adoption of technology that enabled the ministry to track pilgrimage vehicles so that it could give assistance at any time, reach out to pilgrims through media platforms and ensure the safe arrival and departure of Hajj visitors, Hyari said.

Under an agreement signed between the ministry and “eFAWATEERcom”, e-donations will be directed towards the ministry’s Zakat fund, mosques across the Kingdom, charity iftars, the needs of orphaned and underprivileged children and development projects that help needy families earn a living, the spokesperson added.

“E-donations will not require any additional fees, and donors will be able to help without needing to fill out forms, which makes the process smooth and simple,” Hyari noted.

Through eFAWATEERcom, which is owned by the Central Bank of Jordan, donors and contributors will be able to donate at any time and have immediate access to services, which will increase the efficiency of donations and provide quick and safe transactions, thus “boosting the likelihood of receiving more contributions”, Hyari added.

“We will not close the doors on the many ways to donate, but keeping up with the progress of technology has become essential,” Hyari noted.

The spokesperson also noted that the ministry will announce further new systems in the upcoming period.

AMMAN — By the end of 2019, more than 71 tourism vessels and cruise ships are expected to have docked in Aqaba, exceeding the expectations of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA).

In March of 2019, former spokesperson for ASEZA, Abdul Mahdi Qatameen, told The Jordan Times that “52 cruise ships and tourism vessels are expected to visit Aqaba this year, with an estimated 96,000 tourists on board”.

However, President of ASEZA Sharhabeel Madi told The Jordan Times in a recent phone interview that “so far, 60 cruise ships have arrived. Three vessels touched down last Thursday alone, carrying 2,244 tourists of different nationalities”.

Figures provided by the director of the tourism department at ASEZA, Ruba Qsous, show that that the number of ships will increase by 11 ships from last year.

“Since the beginning of the year, we could tell that our collaboration with social media influencers both outside and inside Jordan to promote Aqaba is generating positive results,” she added.

Madi noted that the authority’s plan to promote “The Golden Triangle”, composed of Aqaba, Wadi Rum, and Petra, has “succeeded in attracting not only small cruise ships, but dozens of giant vessels”.

“This time of the year is the busiest season for Aqaba, and a large number of giant cruise ships and vessels are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks, carrying tourists from various European countries and the United States,” he added.

According to the authority, an estimated 100,000 tourists are expected to arrive in Aqaba during the 2020 tourism season.

“We are hoping, however, to be as pleasantly surprised as this year, and see the actual numbers exceeding our expectations,” Madi concluded.

AMMAN — After noticing a scarcity of digital content in Arabic, young entrepreneurs Feras Al Kiswani and Ahmad Al Masri established Progressive Generation Studios (PGS) in 2011 to fill the need they saw.

PGS focuses on digital content for children including 2D and 3D animations and educational videos, Kiswani and Masri told The Jordan Times in a recent e-mail interview.

“We decided to inspire children, to give them the choice to think, to draw positive memories in their lives,” they said.

“We believe in Arab children’s ability to beat all fears and overcome bad conditions in life; it is crucial for them to hang on to their dreams. Yes, they will make them come true! We will support them step by step, as they will fly with their dreams in a world full of love, beauty, peace and warmth,” they added.

Kiswani was one of several young entrepreneurs from around the Kingdom who met with His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday to discuss their projects. During the meeting, His Majesty reaffirmed his keenness to support young Jordanians’ innovative projects, heard from the entrepreneurs and voiced pride in their achievements.

“His Majesty was very modest and supportive, and it was one of the best moments in my life to give him the results of very long years of hard work. He was very proud of me and my partner and our company. This is the real achievement for us,” Kiswani said.

The two entrepreneurs said their project comprises “the largest Arabic digital library”, with over 50,000 minutes of content. They also partner with various TV channels to air content geared towards children, broadcasting seriesw on Kuwait, Jordan, CN, and Tunisia TV stations.

“Soon we will launch our new live online channel PG KIDS, which will be available on all platforms” they said.

The company drew the support of Oasis500, a local start-up accelerator, and attracted investments worth $1 million from international companies.

“Oasis500 gave us mentoring, seed investment and networking, which was very fruitful for us,” Kiswani said.

“We gained the trust with the big players within the MENA region through hard work and giving them the highest quality for reasonable prices. We deal with our clients as partners, not as customers,” they said.

Kiswani and Masri said the team aims to study new opportunities on a weekly and monthly basis and to pre-plan projects by anticipating any obstacles. “We make small, achievable steps to move forward,” they said.

As the company grows, Kiswani said, its mission is to become one of the world’s leading producers and entertainment providers, specifically in Arabic.

“We seek to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable animated digital content Edutainment experiences in the region... [We want] to become the Walt Disney of the MENA region in the next three years,” he added.

Optimism, scepticism in the air around Cabinet reshuffle

By - Nov 07,2019 - Last updated at Nov 07,2019

AMMAN — Activists and citizens on Thursday expressed scepticism about the newly reshuffled government’s ability to bring in change, saying that addressing economic concerns should remain the top priority.

Mohammad Nasser, an accountant, said that what matters is the results.

“We should wait to see what this reshuffle will result in. This will most likely be the last reshuffle for the premier, so the team deserves this opportunity to prove what they can do,” said Nasser.

“The government should focus on addressing unemployment and economic woes. It should work to enhance public services, which are not the best,” said Nasser.

Lawyer and activist Omar Atout told The Jordan Times said that he “has no expectations from the limited government reshuffle by Prime Minister Omar Razzaz ”.

“The new government and the last four governments are the same to me, and changing governments every four months is not healthy and will not guarantee the stability they need in order to implement their long-term strategies,” Atout said.

Media and Advocacy Strategist Tamara Khzouz added her voice to Atout’s, saying that “the reshuffle is no longer relevant to people, and the government needs to work on gaining people’s trust”.

“In order for the government to overcome the problem of people’s mistrust, it needs to seriously work on the political development reform and needs to set a strong election law to ensure a stronger Parliament,” Khzouz told The Jordan Times.

Adel Dhiab, a salesman at a private company, said the challenges the government is facing are “immense”.

“We want results. We want better services and better education and better transport and better medical services,” said Dhiab to The Jordan Times.

In the same vein, Jamal Haj Abed, a worker at a garment store, said: “There is a big decline in sales and cost of living is increasing in Jordan...the government should implement projects and take all the steps it can to improve the situation, as the solution is not by imposing new taxes all the time.”

“We want better economic conditions. I believe this is the number one priority at this stage...we cannot tolerate more taxes...it’s the government job to find solutions,” Abed told The Jordan Times.

A political analyst who preferred anonymity, told The Jordan Times that previous government reshuffle experiences have taught people to “lower their expectations”.

“The reshuffle is rarely about a drastic change in strategy, approach or vision, but a shot to rejuvenate the government and its life,” the political analyst said.

“It is never understood why certain ministers leave, why others remain and why the new ones are being selected,” the political analyst added.

The geographical and tribal quotas “are the only constant in this never-ending mix and reappointment of individuals. The only indicator by which people can judge a reshuffle is through looking at individual ministries”, according to the analyst.

“Some ministers who have been taken out were perceived positively by the public, so it was not easy to understand why they left. Some ministers who were added carry an additional value as individuals, but it remains to be seen how the overall dynamic will turn out to be,” the analyst said.

Executive president of the Centre of Defending Freedom of Journalists Nidal Mansour pointed out that Thursday’s reshuffle is considered the “last chance for Premier Razzaz”.

“Razzaz’s economic team has admitted that it failed in dealing with the economic portfolio, and what we need at this point in time is a strong economic team that will deal with the problems related to people’s standard of living and address poverty, among other deep problems,” Mansour said.

Mansour told The Jordan Times that another challenge Razzaz will face is achieving a “good economic and political reform so that reflects on the situation of human rights, freedom of speech and expression, and stronger civil societies”.

Mansour also said another major challenge in the path of the new government is “dealing with the MPs who are in their final year of service”.

“The government might face a lot of challenges and objections from some deputies who want to oppose the government policies to gain more popularity in preparation for the new elections,” Mansour explained.

Social media users were more critical about the reshuffle, with many stressing that “nothing will change”.

Mohammad Manaseer posted on social media: “The same faces every time, and nothing will ever change.”

Rami Othman wrote on Facebook: “Please focus on improving citizens’ wellbeing rather than collecting money from our pockets”.

Amal Hanin was more optimistic with her comment on Facebook.

“Congratulations to all the new ministers and I wish them luck in serving our beloved country,” Hanin wrote.

The nine new e-services, inaugurated by Prime Minister Omar Razzaz, are part of the economic and investment stimulus plan that aims at facilitating investment, easing procedures and upgrading the JIC's services, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

New e-services include the issuance of new investor IDs, renewal and replacement for old or lost IDs, issuance and renewal of IDs for investors' family members, registration of institutions in development zones, first-time registration of individual institutions, changing the method of use, registration and renewal of subscriptions to the Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC), amendments to subscriptions to the ACC and issuance of environmental permits.

The premier, during a meeting with Labour Minister Nidal Bataineh and JIC Chairman Khaled Wazani, added that this e-services package would save investors time and efforts, noting that what previously consumed a number of weeks can now be achieved within 48 hours, according to Petra.

Razzaz noted that the commission on Thursday took a set of decisions to stimulate investments, mainly those outside of Amman, as well as ease exports and the employment of Jordanian citizens.

The  decision to facilitate procedures for establishing recreational areas and shopping malls outside Amman, which included reducing the required area from 100,000 to 10,000 square metres, aims to stimulate investments across the Kingdom's governorates, and create jobs for Jordanians, Razzaz added.

Talks also went over structuring the JIC to provide "single window" services, as well as to make the commission the go-to destination for investment-related inquiries and services.
