Yi stressed the importance of the telecom sector as an enabler for other industries’ sustainable development and growth in light of the evolving 5G landscape and the immense opportunities for enterprises in the 5G era.

“Although the pandemic brought many challenges to countries around the world, it has accelerated digitalization rapidly. During the pandemic, online education, shopping, working, and medical treatment became common scenarios. Enterprises' cloud access also became the top choice and 85% of companies chose cloud services. All these changes show that ICT is the new engine of digital economic growth in the post-pandemic era and should be taken as a priority by all the governments, so that the economy can grow sustainably and play a more important role,” said Yi.

“We are working with customers to build a win-win relationship with partners. In the era of accelerating 5G deployment and digital transformation, we will create and seize opportunities for common development and help society escape from the impact of the pandemic.”

For example, Huawei cooperated with the Jordan government to upgrade the education system. Moreover, Jordan’s education network adopted 5G, ICT technologies and related smart devices, which played an important role in distance education during the pandemic.

Yi also discussed Huawei’s role in local ICT talent development. “In the digital economy era, digital talent will be the key to digital transformation and economic growth. By applying technologies such as connectivity and cloud computing to education, Huawei is committed to cultivating innovative talents for higher and vocational colleges, accelerating innovation in teaching, research, and narrowing the digital divide, and promoting balanced education development in basic education,” said Yi.

With digital technologies advancing rapidly, securing networks and cybersecurity continues to be Huawei’s top priority. “We have a sound cybersecurity and privacy protection assurance structure which has a leading global records.” Yi said.

“Our cybersecurity practices have won the continuous trust of our partners including those in the Middle East. We believe that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and it’s crucial to have an open discussion around cybersecurity governance architecture in line of international standards like 3GPP, GSMA NESAS and others.

Last year, we unveiled the largest cybersecurity and transparency center in the world in Dongguan China, and we hope that we will be able to invite you to visit there after the pandemic to experience this open collaboration platform targeted at addressing cybersecurity challenges and come up with joint innovations for improving the future of cybersecurity.” Yi continued.

Additionally, during the Summit, leading regional operators and Huawei launched IntelligentRAN, an advanced telecom network solution, which comes in line with Huawei’s objective to empower the telecommunication sector with more advanced innovations and value for its own business  and other sectors and industries businesses by means of injecting intelligent to wireless networks and achieve autonomous driving network in the wireless domain in the future. “The intelligentRAN architecture is constructed to develop a mobile network with intelligent service operation, intelligent network optimization, and simplified O&M. This feature helps customers and partners quickly provision services and guarantee user experience, maximize user experience, reduce energy consumption, and simplify O&M in multi-frequency and multi-mode scenarios.”

In 2021, Huawei invested over 22% of annual revenue in R&D targeted at supporting the long-term sustainable development of the ICT industry. Yi emphasized the company will continue to invest significantly in intelligent solutions and services such as ICT infrastructure and cloud services.

The SAMENA Leaders’ Summit 2022 is a top telecom industry event hosted by Huawei for the 9th consecutive year and attended by industry leaders, experts and decision makers from telecom companies, regulatory bodies, industry organizations and related stakeholders from SAMENA Region (South Asia, Middle East North Africa).

QAIA receives ACI Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2022

May 11,2022 - Last updated at May 11,2022

Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) has recently been acknowledged by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific as one of only 12 airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East to receive the Green Airports Recognition 2022 for airports serving five to 15 million passengers.

QAIA was granted Gold recognition for its efforts in transitioning towards a sustainable, low-carbon future, focusing on its achievements in heating and cooling system improvements.

This year, the Green Airports Recognition was held under the theme of Carbon Management — in line with global industry goals to reduce carbon emissions and attain net-zero status by 2050.

The recognition aims to promote environmental best practices to curb the impact of the aviation industry on the environment and champion airports that bring forth outstanding carbon management projects.

To this end, participating airports demonstrated exceptional best practices in their respective decarbonisation journeys — specifically in fuel consumption (Scope 1) and electricity consumption (Scope 2) carbon emission reductions. In its application, Airport International Group shared QAIA’s experience in enhancing the heating and cooling systems inside and outside the Passenger Terminal.

The two-phase project included utilising control optimisation software to improve cooling plant performance and decommissioning a historic cooling and heating plant, which resulted in significant decreases in energy consumption, carbon emissions and costs.

“We are delighted to witness QAIA once again pioneer green practices within the regional aviation industry and are equally proud to have our experiences in carbon reduction recognised as best practices by Airports Council International,” commented Airport International Group CEO, Nicolas Claude.

Huawei stresses on crucial role of 5G in driving digital transformation across the region

May 11,2022 - Last updated at May 11,2022

DUBAI — Leaders and experts from the telecommunications industry came together at this year's SAMENA Council Leaders' Summit hosted by Huawei for the ninth consecutive year. The annual gathering was held under the theme of "Thriving with Resilience & Integration in the New Opportunity Realm" and focused on the new business opportunities that 5G and allied technologies provide for all industries and economic sectors.

This year, Huawei shed light on the role of 5G, cloud and digital power in tackling the sustainability needs of the telecom industry and how an integrated intelligent ICT architecture will light up the future. Through its 'Everything as a Service' model, Huawei highlighted the cloud's integral role in enabling the digital economy and data sovereignty.

The Summit also focused on the opportunities gained by integrating technologies, infrastructure investment, connectivity, and spectrum availability, which will benefit vertical industries and economic sectors.

Steven Yi, President of Huawei Middle East, highlighted the crucial role of 5G in driving digital transformation across the region and the immense opportunities for enterprises in the 5G era.

"Digital renaissance triggered by the pandemic has pivoted digital transformation to new heights, with 5G era infrastructure and communications technologies taking center stage. A strong drive for digital transformation is taking place worldwide, and Huawei is committed to bring the ingenious new technologies that will enrich people's lives with immersive digital services and enabling new opportunities in the industry’s digital transformation with smart digital solutions.” Yi noted.

Bocar A. BA, SAMENA Council CEO, said, "We held very fruitful discussions on the future direction of our networks, particularly in the 5G era. What was apparent is the transformational role of networks in driving digital transformation and economic growth. "

"Participants also agreed that networks themselves must evolve to meet the region's sustainability goals. In this regard, the role of innovation in enabling net-zero transition through digital power technologies is increasingly important for the Middle East," he said.

Vanness You, Vice President of Marketing and Solution, Huawei Middle East, officially launched Huawei IntelligentRAN in the region.

This significantly reduces energy consumption across the entire network.

Huawei Executives took part in several panel discussions. Mohamed Madkour, VP of Wireless Networks Marketing and Solutions at Huawei, participated in the "Leaders' Exchange Connectivity for the New Decade" panel.

He noted that intelligent connectivity is the lifeline for everyone and integral to every country's digital economy. He reiterated Huawei's commitment to providing powerful, intelligent, simple and efficient digital infrastructure and operational tools to create more commercial and social values for societies, industries and economies.

He also highlighted that growth oriented ICT policies are key to facilitate a favorable environment for business and technology innovations.

Emaad Ahmed, Chief Expert, Huawei Middle East, took part in a panel discussion titled "Techno-Business Convergence Achieving Sustainable Integration in the 5G Era." He noted that operators' OPEX increases due to system and network complexity. Therefore, reducing OPEX and achieving green development is essential for operators' future growth in light of the carbon-neutral background and the demand for cost reduction and increased efficiency.

Joined by senior executives from leading companies in the region, Mr. Paul M. Scanlan, CTO of Carrier Network Business Unit, Huawei, participated in "Cloud & Network Synergies: Achieving Resilience in Service Delivery" roundtable. ‘1 Billion Meals’ Ramadan initiative combats hunger in over 50 countries

By - Apr 27,2022 - Last updated at Apr 27,2022

AMMAN — The “1 Billion Meals” initiative, organised by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, aims to combat hunger throughout Ramadan.

The initiative, launched at the start of the holy month, is run in coordination with the World Food Programme, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Food Banking Regional Network, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment and relevant humanitarian and charity institutions in the targeted countries, according to a statement by the organisers.

“The ‘1 Billion Meals’ initiative is the largest humanitarian initiative of its kind in the region,” Sara Al Nuaimi, Director of Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) told The Jordan Times.

Nuaimi added that the initiative aims to provide food support to the most vulnerable groups in the world — particularly women, children, refugees, displaced people and victims of disasters and crises.

Nuaimi noted that the initiative will remain active until it has collected the contributions required to deliver one billion meals to the underprivileged and the undernourished around the world.

“The initiative will deliver support in the form of food parcels,” Nuaimi stated.

She added that the parcels will contain ingredients to prepare a nutritious meal, or will provide vouchers that can be directly redeemed in participating stores in more than 50 countries, noting that this ensures the help reaches the less fortunate communities in the most efficient means possible.

The countries, which will receive the aid include Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Tunisia, Iraq, Egypt, Kosovo, Brazil, Benin, Burundi, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Senegal, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Angola, Sierra Leone, India, Nepal, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and others.

The initiative is also directly responding to the increasing global hunger crisis by delivering consistent humanitarian assistance to underserved communities all over the world. It also supports efforts to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal Two that aims to end hunger by 2030, according to Nuaimi.

“Today, more than 800 million people are undernourished globally, 52 million of whom live in the Middle East and North Africa,” Nuaimi added.

She highlighted that the majority of them are women and children and 25,000 people globally die of hunger every 10 seconds, of which 10,000 of them are children.

The number of people suffering from starvation or “catastrophic hunger” has also increased sixfold since the start of the pandemic, with hunger claiming a child’s life every 10 seconds, Nuaimi said.
“This is the third chapter of our efforts to combat global hunger,” she noted.

She added that MBRGI has already launched two previous campaigns: “10 Million Meals” and last year’s “100 Million Meals, and we see “1 Billion Meals” as a long-term continuation of these efforts.

The campaign will continue until we have reached the one billion target and, once that has been achieved, we will assess its success and determine in what ways, and in which countries, it can evolve to help even more people escape hunger, she noted.

“Logistics will be an area of increased focus,” she said.

Nuaimi pointed out that there are also new challenges, such as a 50 per cent increase in the number of displaced people in Africa since 2020, which is one of the regions most targeted by the campaign.

The ongoing disruptions caused by the pandemic, particularly to supply chains, continue to provide challenges, too, she noted.
