AMMAN — A Border Guards' captain was killed and a soldier was injured early on Tuesday while engaging a group of smugglers on the Kingdom's northeastern borders, according to a Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) source.

According to a JAF statement the smugglers took advantage of fog and low visibility to open fire on a Border Guard patrol, as they tried to smuggle “large amounts” of narcotics. The patrol returned fire, successfully pushing the smugglers back into the Syrian territory, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The rules of engagement were applied, resulting in the thwarting of the smuggling attempt and killing a number of smugglers, the source said. The incident left Captain Iyad Nuaimi dead while Captain Salem Salem was injured. Captain Salem was evacuated to the King Talal Military Hospital with a moderate health condition.

The army emphasised its commitment to national security, reiterating that it will not tolerate any smuggling or infiltration attempts. The army offered condolences and sympathies to the fallen captain's family and wished the injured soldier a speedy recovery.
