AMMAN — A total of 1,603 electricity breakdowns were reported in the Kingdom during the Eid Al Fitr holiday within the Electricity Distribution Co. (EDCO) jurisdiction, Chairman of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission Farouq Hiyari said on Monday.

During an inspection of electricity sector institutions Hiyari said that all breakdowns were fully resolved.

There were approximately 1,112 reported electrical malfunctions in the central governorates, 410 in the northern governorates and 81 in the southern governorates.

The chairman noted that EDCO dealt with 16,775 calls between Wednesday and Sunday, and that power demand peaked at 2,719 megawatts on June 4 around midnight.

Hiyari said that during the holiday the commission was prepared to swing into action in case of emergencies and set up a complaint centre with services rendered around the clock.

He stressed that the commission has the ability to monitor electrical infrastructure with a surveillance system connected to the national control centre, which is connected to the National Electricity Company.

The chairman noted that the department also kept a tab on the supply of petroleum derivatives and availability of gas cylinders.

He also called on citizens to report any shortage of fuel, power outages and any tampering with the power grid.
