Jordan, Russia sign nuclear safety deal

AMMAN — Jordan and Russia on Saturday signed a cooperation agreement in the field of regulating nuclear and radiation safety for peaceful use of nuclear energy, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The agreement was signed by Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission Chief Commissioner Farouq Hiyari and Chairman of Russia’s Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Alexey Aleshin.
The five-year agreement outlines cooperation between the two sides to share expertise in supervising and monitoring nuclear substances, radioactive waste, storing facility management and quality control of nuclear safety equipment, Hiyari said.
The official described the agreement as part of the Kingdom’s plans to attract nuclear technology for peaceful uses and to enact or amend related legislation to reflect its compliance with international standards in the field of nuclear safety.
The government has chosen Russian technology to build its first nuclear reactor, expected to start operating 2024-2025, in accordance with the council of ministers’ resolution on November 27, 2013.
