AMMAN — The Jordanian delegation concluded its visit to the UN in New York  last week after presenting Jordan’s National Voluntary Report  “The Road to Sustainable Development” at the UN High-level Meeting in New York, according to a Planning Ministry statement.

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury headed the delegation, which included MP Wafaa Bani Mustafa, representative of the Jordanian Parliament; head of the Civil Coalition for Sustainable Development Asma Khader; Secretary General of the National Committee for Women Affairs Salma Nims; representative of the Civil Society Coordination Organisation Amer Bani Amer; Bayan Saadeh, a youth sector representative; and a representative of civil society organisations, Osama Azzam.

On the sidelines of this meeting, Fakhoury held meetings with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley and heads of European delegations and UN organisations, in the presence of Jordanian Ambassador to the UN Sima Bahous, the statement said.

During the meetings, Fakhoury discussed programmes by UN agencies to support Jordan and the requirements of supporting the Executive Development Programme, which represents the “integrated national plan” for development and progress of the international community’s commitments towards Jordan, according to the outcomes of the London and Brussels conferences on Syria and refugee host countries.

Fakhoury  said that Jordan has reached its “maximum capacity” to shoulder the burdens of hosting Syrian refugees.

He stressed the importance of the continued support of the international community to Jordan in order to maintain momentum during the current year and the next stage, particularly the strengthening of the Kingdom’s stability and “resilience”, which requires a transition from a short-term humanitarian response to long-term development contributions, the statement read.

For their part, the UN secretary general and the heads of delegations stressed the continued implementation of the international community’s commitments to Jordan, alongside the Jordan Response Plan. During the three-day forum, the Jordanian delegation participated in several meetings related to the mechanisms, ways and challenges of implementing the sustainable development agenda 2030.

The delegation participated in the meeting held by the League of Arab States in cooperation with ESCWA on multidimensional poverty and the study carried out on the Arab countries.

The delegation also participated in meetings related to youth issues and youth unemployment.

In a meeting on women’s affairs, the delegation stressed that the economic and social empowerment of women is “one of the most important” priorities for Jordan, alongside efforts towards equality, empowerment and elimination of discrimination against women.

The delegation also joined a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
