PSD offers free iftar banquets near highways, remote areas

AMMAN — The Public Security Department (PSD) is organising free iftar banquets at its security stations on inter-governorate routes and near border and remote areas around the Kingdom, the department said on Tuesday.

"PSD stations are a sanctuary for motorists... offering assistance to those who need it," the PSD said in a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The iftar banquets are offered to long-distance travellers on roads where restaurants are few and far between, the statement said, adding that past years have been marked by accidents on highways during the hours before sunset as motorists exceed the speed limit to reach cities in time for iftar.

Offering iftar on the road reduces the possibility of such accidents, the PSD added.

Iftar is the main meal in Ramadan, when Muslims break their day-long fast, which entails abstaining from food and drink from dawn until after sunset.
