Women constitute only 25% of workforce

AMMAN — The number of workers registered with the Social Security Corporation (SSC) increased by some 1.3 million from 2000 to 2017, the Department of Statistics (DoS) said on Tuesday.

In a DoS report issued for Labour Day, and carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the department said that the average monthly salary had increased from JD60 in the mid 1970s to JD211 in the mid 1990s, and was most recently JD500 in 2017.

Male employees in the public and private sectors in 2017 constituted 75 per cent of the workforce, while females made up 25 per cent, the DoS said.

The report noted that some 133,000 women work for the public sector, 64 per cent of whom work in education and 17 per cent in public administration.

A total of 14 per cent of employees registered with the SSC work in the health and social work sectors, and 4 per cent work in other economic activities.

The public and private sectors comprised of 88 per cent Jordanians and 12 per cent non-Jordanians in 2017.

Employees whose educational level was under Tawjihi (general secondary education certificate examination) constituted 36 per cent of the total workforce in the public and private sectors, while 17 per cent of employees held Tawjihi certificates.

Those who held a diploma made up 9 per cent of employees and those with a university degree constituted 36 per cent of the total number of workers in 2017.
