Discriminatory treatment

Aug 13,2015 - Last updated at Aug 13,2015

Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog has literally accused the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of being racist when it comes to the treatment of Israel’s Arab citizens.

Herzog made his outspoken views known during a recent visit to the Arab town in the north as part of a tour of Arab communities in Israel.

Herzog described the government’s slashing of 500 million shekels from the budget set aside for strengthening the Arab community in Israel as a clear example of its racist decision to ignore rightful demands for equality and social justice, according to news reports.

The Zionist Union leader warned that the funding cut might have severe consequences for Israeli society, expressing fear that such blatant discriminatory treatment of Arab Israelis “will lead Israel to places that we don’t want to arrive and must not arrive at even to the point of causing a civilian rebellion”.

Herzog reminded the Israeli government that the Arabs in question “are citizens with equal rights who must be provided with jobs, education and health”.

Herzog is not the only Israeli official who wrongs the current Israeli policies towards Palestinians.

Israeli President Reven Rivlin has also been saying almost the same thing.

If senior Israeli officials and statesmen are so critical of the current regime in Tel Aviv, no wonder Palestinians feel the same and accuse the Israeli government of discriminating against them, whether they live in northern Israel or in the West Bank.
