Significant visit

Aug 06,2015 - Last updated at Aug 06,2015

By all accounts, Prince Mohammad Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s visit to Amman this week for talks with His Majesty King Abdullah was a big success.

The talks between the King and the Saudi deputy crown prince, second deputy prime minister and minister of defence, opened a new page in the existing brotherly relations between Saudi Arabia and Jordan and ushered in a new era of fraternity.

Upon directives from Custodian of the Two Holy Shrines King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and King Abdullah, the talks ended with agreement on the importance of boosting political, economic, military and security cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting culminated with Jordan and Saudi Arabia issuing a joint statement that highlighted the importance of joint action to fight terrorism and terrorist organisations, so as to protect the teachings of Islam, which preaches tolerance, and defend the security of the region and its peoples.

The statement also made reference to Iran’s attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of Arab countries, which are aimed at destabilising these countries and jeopardising their security, with the two sides voicing their rejection of such interference that violates all international conventions and pacts.

The two leaders also discussed the situation in Syria and Iraq, developments in Yemen, the Mideast peace process and the burden borne by Jordan as a result of hosting Syrian refugees.

The meeting could not have happened at a more opportune time when regional tensions are at their zenith.

Standing shoulder to shoulder, as the security of each kingdom is an integral part of that of the other, will no doubt contribute to regional stability.

Prince Mohammad’s visit also sends a clear message to all countries in the Middle East and beyond that Amman and Riyadh are united and stronger than ever in the face of regional challenges.
